Vanessa’s eyes widened.
For a brief moment, panic flashed across her face.
A real panic.
The kind people show when they realize a secret is no longer secret.
I remembered hearing about that folder months earlier.
A missing merger file.
A confidential business document.
Something important.
Something that had caused major problems at Daniel’s company.
Suddenly, all the pieces started fitting together.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
“We need to leave.”
I pulled away immediately.
“No.”
For the first time all night, my voice sounded stronger than his.
“I think you need to explain.”
But Daniel had no explanation.
Because there wasn’t one.
Not a believable one.
Not anymore.

Richard pulled out his phone.
His expression had transformed completely.
Gone was the friendly host.
Gone was the smiling executive.
In his place stood a man realizing that both his employee and his wife had betrayed him.
“Everyone,” he announced.
“The party is over.”
Conversations stopped.
Guests exchanged nervous glances.
Within minutes, people began leaving.
The music stopped.
The laughter disappeared.
The celebration died.
Then Richard looked directly at Daniel.
“The blue folder contained the only physical copy of the Hartwell merger.”
His voice remained calm.
Almost too calm.
“I spent two months investigating who leaked it.”
Daniel said nothing.
Vanessa said nothing.
Because what could they say?
Their defense had been destroyed by a four-year-old witness.
Richard looked at his wife.
“Monday morning.”
His voice was ice.
“You’ll be speaking with my lawyer.”
Then he turned toward Daniel.
“And you’re finished.”
Daniel immediately began pleading.
Talking about pressure.
Money.
Providing for his family.
Building a better future.
Excuses poured out of him.
One after another.
None of them mattered.
Because every excuse ignored the same reality.
